People I would NEVER allow near my child!

August 8th, 2008 at 03:53 am

Okay, I admit I laughed out loud after reading this story on Yahoo! News today.
**********

MARATHON, Fla. - Authorities say a grandmother was arrested for driving around the parking lot of a Marathon grocery store with her 3-year-old child sitting on the roof of the car.

Monroe County Sheriff's Office deputies were called to the Publix store Tuesday and arrested a 54-year-old woman after she was driving around with her three-year-old granddaughter on the roof of her car.

The grandmother was released from jail 15 hours later.

The woman said Thursday she would never let anything hurt her granddaughter. She says she was driving at "snail-speed" and holding the child's leg.

Authorities say the woman told police she was giving the child some air and letting her have fun. !?!?!

She faces charges of child abuse. The child is back with her mother.

I just saw this myself and couldn't believe it!

    Jan,

I was sure from the title of the article that it was going to be that the grandmother put the little girl up there and "forgot" her for a second...but then I read the explanation and I think my mouth just about fell open!

Of course, as soon as I read that the little girl is unharmed I started laughing because it is so ridiculous!

    Wow

Mari, that is exactly what I thought about it when I read the title! I figured she sat a car seat or something on the top and drove off with the child still there. I couldn't believe she thought it was a "fun" activity for a three year old! And, my mouth DID fall open as I sat there reading it. I don't think my brain comprehended at first that she did it on purpose!

Weird! It has just never ran across my mind to give my grandkids a ride on the roof on my car. Fresh air? Some fun? I think I'll stick to baking cookies or pushing the grandkids on the swing set.

Oh man. One of my friends tells a story about how her dad used to let them ride in the trunk of the car. With the trunk shut. Isn't that nice?

You mean you folks never car surfed?
though most do as idiotic teens not toddlers....

Hee hee. That is really reckless, although I did something similar (though a lot safer) when I was a kid. My dad used to let me and my siblings, friends and teammates sit on the edges of the rolled-down windows in his SUV with our upper bodies sticking out the window. We'd hold onto the top of the window frame. There would be three of us sitting at the back and one in each of the other windows and he'd drive us around the suburbs. We'd sometimes bang on the roof and holler if we'd just won a softball game. We knew to duck back in if we saw a police car. (We were all at least 8 years old; he'd never have let a 3-year-old do it!)

It was the coolest thing ever. Of course these days my dad would never get away with it.

Uh, wasn't the roof of a car anywhere in Florida HOT ENOUGH TO FRY AN EGG yesterday?!

Truth is stranger than fiction! You just can't make this stuff up! Rolleyes

  11. Amber Says:

Unbelievable, I read this today in the paper. One of her daughters was actually in the car (back seat) whild she had the kid up through the sun roof. I guess she deosn't realize that anything could have happened like a car speeding hitting her...idiot

  12. CanadianSaver Says:

Oh I hadn't seen this... very dangerous and very stupid of a grandparent to do that!!
